Porcelain veneers are one of the most immediate and dramatic improvements you can choose for your smile.
How do Porcelain Veneers Work?
Porcelain veneers are a highly individualized treatment. They can be used on any number of teeth, and they are custom-shaded to blend in attractively with your smile. After Dr. Morris designs your treatment, he sends the specifications to his dental laboratory. There, a specialist called a dental ceramist meticulously crafts each veneer by hand. Porcelain veneers are a very popular treatment due to their ability to correct several cosmetic flaws at the same time. They are often a great addition to a smile makeover, and they can also complement extensive restorative procedures for patients needing full mouth reconstruction. With one or several porcelain veneers, your smile can look straighter, brighter, and more symmetrical.
Dentists use shade guides and other techniques to carefully design porcelain veneers that blend in with your smile and flatter your facial features.
Most patients will be approved to receive porcelain veneers. However, it is important that you receive any procedures required to restore your oral health first. Periodontal disease and tooth decay, among other issues, may compromise the effectiveness of your treatment. We will never recommend porcelain veneers if we are not confident in the success of your treatment.
We want to help you achieve the smile you really want. This is why we dedicate time to discussing your aesthetic goals and portraying the kind of results you can expect during your initial consultation. Besides color matching, Dr. Morris will take into consideration the shape of your face and the way it moves when you smile to create the best results. At this time, Dr. Morris may also take measurements and x-rays of your teeth, and use that information to begin designing your veneers. Only when you and Dr. Morris are completely satisfied will we finalize your treatment plan.
Procedure for Veneers
During the first step of the procedure, a very minimal amount of tooth enamel (less than a millimeter) is removed to accommodate the width of the veneer and to create a solid bond between the veneer and the surface of the tooth. Removing as little material as possible is more conservative, and it also helps the results look more natural. Once the tooth or teeth have been prepared, Dr. Morris will take impressions to send to his lab. It will take between one and two weeks for the veneers to be fabricated. In the meantime, he may place temporary veneers.
When your new veneers are ready, you will come back to our office so that Dr. Morris can attach them permanently to your teeth. To create a strong attachment, he will first etch (roughen) the tooth surface, and then apply a type of dental cement to the back of the veneer and place it on your tooth. During this process, he can make fine adjustments to get just the right position and fit. After the veneer is in the proper position, a special light is used to quickly activate the bonding agents and harden the cement. Dr. Morris can then check your bite and make any final touches.
With porcelain veneers, virtually anyone can have a glamorous, flawless-looking smile. Veneers are a relatively conservative cosmetic treatment that can make a dramatic difference in your appearance in a matter of weeks. Many patients experience a boost in self-confidence with a smile they can feel proud of.
